Schools in Portugal for Expat Children

Portugal has three school systems: public (free), private Portuguese, and international schools. Your choice depends on budget, language, how long you're staying, and your child's age. Public schools are surprisingly good — many expat families use them successfully.

How to choose

Public schools are assigned by address (your school catchment area). Enrollment is typically June-July for the September start. International schools require early application — some have waiting lists. Contact the Agrupamento de Escolas for your area to understand your options.

Insider Tips

  • Children adapt to Portuguese faster than you think — most are conversational within 3-6 months
  • Public school enrollment window is June-July. Don't miss it or you'll need to apply for a vacancy
  • Your address determines your catchment school. Research school reputation BEFORE choosing where to live
  • International schools in Lisbon: St Julian's, Carlucci American International, CAISL, Deutsche Schule
  • International schools in Porto: CLIP, Oporto British School, Deutsche Schule
  • Children are placed by age, not academic level. A UK Year 6 child may be placed in 5th or 6th year
  • Ask about 'apoio' (learning support) — public schools offer free Portuguese language support for foreign children
