Dia da Liberdade (Freedom Day)
April 25Celebrates the 1974 Carnation Revolution that ended 48 years of dictatorship. Carnations are placed in rifle barrels as a symbol. Major ceremonies at the Assembleia da Republica.
Dia do Trabalhador (Labour Day)
May 1International Workers' Day. Union marches and political rallies, particularly in Lisbon and Porto.
Corpo de Deus (Corpus Christi)
June 4Moveable date. Religious processions in many towns. Carpet of flowers laid in streets in some municipalities.
Dia de Portugal (Portugal Day)
June 10Dia de Portugal, de Camoes e das Comunidades Portuguesas. Celebrates Portuguese culture and the poet Luis de Camoes. Military parades and cultural events.
Assuncao de Nossa Senhora (Assumption)
August 15Religious holiday. Many Portuguese take summer vacation around this date. Popular pilgrimage time.
Implantacao da Republica (Republic Day)
October 5Celebrates the 1910 revolution that established the Portuguese Republic, ending the monarchy.
Dia de Todos os Santos (All Saints' Day)
November 1Families visit cemeteries to pay respects. Traditional roasted chestnuts (castanhas) sold on streets.
Restauracao da Independencia (Independence Restoration)
December 1Celebrates the 1640 restoration of Portuguese independence from Spain after 60 years of Iberian Union.
Imaculada Conceicao (Immaculate Conception)
December 8Religious holiday. Christmas markets begin opening around this date in most cities.
Natal (Christmas Day)
December 25Family celebration. Traditional bacalhau (codfish) dinner on Christmas Eve. Presents exchanged at midnight.
Municipal Holidays
Every municipality has its own public holiday. Here are the major cities. If your city isn't listed, check with your local Camara Municipal.
Santo Antonio
Lisbon's biggest party. Sardine festivals in Alfama, street decorations, popular marches (marchas populares) down Avenida da Liberdade. Traditionally a night for romance — couples exchange manjerico (basil) pots.
Sao Joao
Porto's wildest night. Plastic hammer fights, grilled sardines on every corner, sky lanterns (now mostly balloon releases), and jumping over fires on the beach. The whole city stays up all night.
Sao Joao
Same saint as Porto but with a more traditional celebration. Famous Festas de Sao Joao de Braga with religious processions and folk music.
Dia do Municipio
Commemorates the city's history. Local events, traditional Algarvean food, and cultural performances.
Rainha Santa Isabel
Celebrates the patron saint. Every even year features the grand Festas da Rainha Santa procession.
Dia da Cidade
Funchal city day. Local events and celebrations on the island.
Sao Pedro
Feira de Sao Pedro — one of the largest popular fairs in Portugal.
Dia do Municipio
Celebrates the city known as the 'Birthplace of Portugal' where the first king was born.

Celebrates the city's heritage. Known as the 'Venice of Portugal' for its canals.
