Not an official public holiday, but most businesses and schools close. Big celebrations in Torres Vedras, Loule, and Ovar.

April 3

Moveable date. Religious observance. Most shops and businesses closed.

Domingo de Pascoa (Easter Sunday)

April 5

Family gatherings. Traditional folar (Easter bread) and roast lamb.

Dia da Liberdade (Freedom Day)

April 25

Celebrates the 1974 Carnation Revolution that ended 48 years of dictatorship. Carnations are placed in rifle barrels as a symbol. Major ceremonies at the Assembleia da Republica.

Dia do Trabalhador (Labour Day)

May 1

International Workers' Day. Union marches and political rallies, particularly in Lisbon and Porto.

Corpo de Deus (Corpus Christi)

June 4

Moveable date. Religious processions in many towns. Carpet of flowers laid in streets in some municipalities.

Dia de Portugal (Portugal Day)

June 10

Dia de Portugal, de Camoes e das Comunidades Portuguesas. Celebrates Portuguese culture and the poet Luis de Camoes. Military parades and cultural events.

Assuncao de Nossa Senhora (Assumption)

August 15

Religious holiday. Many Portuguese take summer vacation around this date. Popular pilgrimage time.

Implantacao da Republica (Republic Day)

October 5

Celebrates the 1910 revolution that established the Portuguese Republic, ending the monarchy.

Dia de Todos os Santos (All Saints' Day)

November 1

Families visit cemeteries to pay respects. Traditional roasted chestnuts (castanhas) sold on streets.

Restauracao da Independencia (Independence Restoration)

December 1

Celebrates the 1640 restoration of Portuguese independence from Spain after 60 years of Iberian Union.

Imaculada Conceicao (Immaculate Conception)

December 8

Religious holiday. Christmas markets begin opening around this date in most cities.

Natal (Christmas Day)

December 25

Family celebration. Traditional bacalhau (codfish) dinner on Christmas Eve. Presents exchanged at midnight.

Lisbon

Lisbon's biggest party. Sardine festivals in Alfama, street decorations, popular marches (marchas populares) down Avenida da Liberdade. Traditionally a night for romance — couples exchange manjerico (basil) pots.

Porto

Sao Joao

June 24

Porto's wildest night. Plastic hammer fights, grilled sardines on every corner, sky lanterns (now mostly balloon releases), and jumping over fires on the beach. The whole city stays up all night.

Braga

Sao Joao

June 24

Same saint as Porto but with a more traditional celebration. Famous Festas de Sao Joao de Braga with religious processions and folk music.

Faro

Commemorates the city's history. Local events, traditional Algarvean food, and cultural performances.

Coimbra

Rainha Santa Isabel

July 4

Celebrates the patron saint. Every even year features the grand Festas da Rainha Santa procession.

Funchal city day. Local events and celebrations on the island.
