IRS Annual Tax Declaration 2026

Applies to: All tax residents in Portugal
Penalty: Fines starting at EUR 150, increasing with delay. Interest charges on unpaid tax.

All Portuguese tax residents must file their annual IRS (income tax) declaration between April 1 and June 30. This includes expats who spent more than 183 days in Portugal during the previous year, or who have their habitual residence here.

What to do

  1. Log into Portal das Financas with your NIF and password (or Chave Movel Digital)
  2. Navigate to 'Entregar Declaracao' > 'IRS'
  3. Review the pre-filled declaration (Financas auto-imports e-Fatura data)
  4. Add any foreign income, rental income, or capital gains not captured
  5. Choose between separate or joint filing if married
  6. Submit and save the confirmation receipt
