IRS Annual Tax Declaration 2026
Applies to: All tax residents in Portugal
Penalty: Fines starting at EUR 150, increasing with delay. Interest charges on unpaid tax.
All Portuguese tax residents must file their annual IRS (income tax) declaration between April 1 and June 30. This includes expats who spent more than 183 days in Portugal during the previous year, or who have their habitual residence here.
What to do
- Log into Portal das Financas with your NIF and password (or Chave Movel Digital)
- Navigate to 'Entregar Declaracao' > 'IRS'
- Review the pre-filled declaration (Financas auto-imports e-Fatura data)
- Add any foreign income, rental income, or capital gains not captured
- Choose between separate or joint filing if married
- Submit and save the confirmation receipt

- NIF and Portal das Financas login
- e-Fatura summary (auto-imported)
- Foreign income statements
- Rental income records
- Capital gains documentation
- NHR status certificate (if applicable)
