Activating Chave Movel Digital (Digital Key)

Chave Movel Digital (CMD) is Portugal's digital authentication system. It lets you access government portals, sign documents digitally, and complete bureaucratic tasks online instead of in person.

What You Need

• Valid passport or EU ID card (or Portuguese Citizen Card)
• NIF
• Portuguese mobile phone number
• Email address

Where to Activate

**Option 1: In person (fastest)** Visit any Loja do Cidadao, Espaco Cidadao, or Conservatoria office. Some Financas offices also offer CMD activation.

**Option 2: Online with video call** Visit autenticacao.gov.pt and follow the online activation process. Requires a video verification call.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Visit a Loja do Cidadao or Espaco Cidadao
2. Request "Ativacao da Chave Movel Digital"
3. Present your ID document
4. Provide your mobile number and email
5. Set a PIN code (6-8 digits)
6. Receive a confirmation SMS
7. Your CMD is active immediately

How It Works

1. Enter your mobile number
2. Enter your PIN
3. Receive an SMS with a one-time code
4. Enter the code to authenticate

• Access Portal das Financas (tax portal)
• Access Seguranca Social Direta
• Sign documents digitally
• Access SNS portal

Important Notes

• CMD works on any Portuguese government portal that supports "Autenticacao.gov"
• You can have CMD linked to your passport, citizen card, or residence permit
• If you change your phone number, you'll need to update it at a physical location
• CMD is the single biggest time-saver for dealing with Portuguese bureaucracy
