Changing Your Address in Portugal

Moving house in Portugal means updating your address at multiple government agencies, banks, and service providers. Portugal runs on geographic assignment — your address determines your health center, school catchment, voting station, and Junta de Freguesia. Missing an update can mean missed mail, wrong tax office, or problems at renewal time.

1

Update at Financas (tax authority)

This is the most important one. Update your fiscal address at Portal das Financas or in person. This determines your tax office and where official tax correspondence goes.

2

Update at Seguranca Social

Update your address through Seguranca Social Direta online or visit your local office. Important for receiving benefit correspondence and determining your assigned services.

3

Notify AIMA (if non-EU with residence permit)

AIMA should be notified of address changes. This is especially important before your residence permit renewal — the address on file must match your actual residence.

4

Register at your new Centro de Saude

Your health center is assigned by address. Visit the new Centro de Saude to transfer your registration. If you had a family doctor at the old one, you'll need to join the waiting list at the new one.

5

Register at your new Junta de Freguesia

For voter registration and local services. Visit in person with proof of your new address.

6

Update at your bank

Visit your bank branch or update online. Required for KYC compliance and ensuring bank statements and cards reach you.

7

Transfer utilities or set up new ones

Cancel or transfer electricity, water, gas, internet. Most providers allow online transfers. You'll need the new property's CPE (electricity) and CUI (water) codes from the contract.

8

Update vehicle registration (if applicable)

If you have a car registered in Portugal, update the address on the DUA through IMT or Automovel Online.

Watch out

  • Financas address must always be current — official notifications are considered delivered to this address even if you don't receive them
  • If you have children in school, moving may change their school catchment — check with the Agrupamento de Escolas
  • Some municipalities require re-registration at the Junta even if you move within the same city
