Charity Donations and Tax Benefits in Portugal

Portugal encourages charitable giving through tax deductions. Donations to qualifying institutions can reduce your IRS tax bill. Understanding which donations qualify and how to claim them maximizes the benefit.

1

Understand qualifying institutions

Deductible donations must go to: IPSS (social solidarity institutions), NGOs, cultural institutions, religious organizations, scientific research entities, or entities classified as being of public interest.

2

Get a receipt with NIF

The institution must issue a receipt with your NIF and theirs. This receipt should appear in your e-Fatura automatically if the institution is properly registered.

3

Know the deduction limits

Donations to social/humanitarian: 25% of amounts donated, up to 15% of your tax liability. Donations to cultural entities: 25% of amounts donated. Donations to environmental: 25% of amounts donated. Total deductions across all categories are capped.

4

Claim on your IRS

Donations should auto-populate in your IRS declaration if the institution reported them. Check e-Fatura before filing. If missing, you can add manually with the receipt.

Watch out

  • Not all charities are tax-deductible — verify the institution's status before assuming a deduction
  • Corporate donations have different rules and higher limits than personal donations
  • Cash donations over a certain amount should be made by bank transfer for documentation purposes
