Claiming Unemployment Benefits in Portugal
If you lose your job in Portugal involuntarily and have paid Social Security contributions, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits (subsidio de desemprego). The amount and duration depend on your contribution history.
Check eligibility
You must have: been employed with Social Security contributions for at least 360 days in the 24 months before unemployment, lost your job involuntarily (not resigned), be registered at IEFP (employment office), and be available for work.
Register at IEFP
Visit your local Centro de Emprego (IEFP office) within 90 days of becoming unemployed. Bring your employment termination document, ID, NIF, and NISS.
Apply for unemployment benefit
Submit your application at Seguranca Social Direta or at a Social Security office within 90 days of unemployment.
Understand the amounts
65% of your reference salary (average of last 12 months of base pay). Minimum: social support index (IAS). Maximum: 2.5x IAS. Duration: 150-540 days depending on age and contribution history.
Meet ongoing obligations
You must: actively seek employment, attend IEFP meetings and training, accept suitable job offers, report any income changes.
Watch out
- ●Resigning voluntarily disqualifies you — only involuntary unemployment (dismissal, contract end, mutual agreement) qualifies
- ●Working undeclared while receiving benefits is fraud and leads to repayment + penalties
- ●EU citizens can transfer unemployment benefits from their home country for up to 3 months (U2 form)
