Enrolling in University in Portugal

Portugal has excellent universities (University of Lisbon, University of Porto, and Nova SBE are internationally ranked). Tuition is affordable compared to the US/UK. EU citizens pay the same fees as Portuguese students.

1

Choose a program

Search on DGES.gov.pt for accredited programs. Many masters programs are taught in English. Undergraduate is mostly in Portuguese.

2

Apply through the correct channel

EU residents: apply through the regular national access system (Concurso Nacional de Acesso) via DGES. International students: apply through each university's international office or through DGES international student contingent.

3

Get qualifications recognized

Foreign secondary school diplomas may need equivalencia. Apply through DGIDC (Direccao-Geral da Educacao) or directly at the university.

4

Understand tuition fees

Public universities: ~697 EUR/year for EU/Portuguese students. International (non-EU) students: 1,500-7,000 EUR/year depending on the program. Private universities: 3,000-15,000 EUR/year.

5

Apply for student housing or find accommodation

University residences are limited and competitive. Most students rent rooms or shared apartments. Budget 250-500 EUR/month in Lisbon/Porto, less in smaller cities.

6

Get a student visa (if non-EU)

D4 student visa required for non-EU nationals. Apply at the Portuguese consulate in your home country before arriving.

Documents needed

  • Acceptance letter from the university
  • Proof of funds
  • Health insurance
  • Criminal record certificate
  • Passport

Watch out

  • Application deadlines are strict — check DGES.gov.pt for the current academic year calendar
  • The Portuguese language requirement varies by program — some accept B1, others require B2 or higher
