Insurance in Portugal for Expats
Some insurance is mandatory in Portugal (car liability, home for mortgaged properties), while others are strongly recommended. Understanding what you need helps avoid both gaps in coverage and paying for unnecessary policies.
Car insurance (mandatory)
Third-party liability is legally required. Comprehensive (contra todos os riscos) covers your vehicle too. Main providers: Fidelidade, Tranquilidade, Allianz, Liberty. Compare at comparaja.pt. Cost: 200-800+ EUR/year depending on vehicle and coverage.
Health insurance (recommended)
Public healthcare (SNS) is available to residents, but private insurance gives faster access to specialists. Providers: Medis, Multicare, AdvanceCare. Cost: 30-150 EUR/month per person.
Home insurance (mandatory if mortgaged)
Multirisco (multi-risk) is required by banks for mortgaged properties. Covers fire, flood, theft, liability. Optional but recommended for all homeowners. Cost: 100-300 EUR/year.
Life insurance (mandatory if mortgaged)
Banks require life insurance tied to the mortgage amount. Decreases as the mortgage balance reduces. Cost: varies by age and health. You can choose your own provider — don't default to the bank's.
Liability insurance (recommended)
Personal civil liability (responsabilidade civil) covers accidental damage you cause to others. Some home policies include this. Standalone policies are ~50-100 EUR/year.
Travel insurance (for frequent travelers)
If you travel often, annual travel insurance (50-150 EUR/year) covers medical emergencies abroad, trip cancellation, and luggage. EHIC/GHIC covers EU basics but not everything.
