Setting Up Utilities in Portugal

Setting up utilities in a new home in Portugal involves separate contracts for electricity, water, gas, and internet. The process is straightforward but each utility has a different provider and sign-up method.

1

Electricity

Main providers: EDP (largest), Galp, Endesa, Iberdrola, GoldEnergy. Compare at precos.erse.pt. You need: NIF, ID, rental contract or property deed, and the CPE code (on the meter or previous bills). Can be set up online or by phone.

2

Water

Municipal service — provider depends on your area (EPAL in Lisbon, Aguas do Porto, etc). Contact your Camara Municipal or the local water company. Requires: NIF, ID, and property/rental proof. Usually set up in person.

3

Gas

Piped gas (gas natural): Galp, EDP, Endesa. Bottled gas (butano): delivered by Galp, Rubis, etc. Many Portuguese homes use bottled gas for cooking. Piped gas requires the same setup as electricity.

4

Internet + TV + Mobile

Main providers: MEO (Altice), NOS, Vodafone. All offer triple-play bundles (internet + TV + phone) from ~30-50 EUR/month. Fiber coverage is excellent in urban areas. MEO has the widest rural coverage.

5

Set up direct debits

Most utilities offer discounts for direct debit (debito direto). Set these up through your bank or via the utility's online portal.

Watch out

  • Utility contracts often have minimum terms (12-24 months) — check cancellation fees before signing
  • Electricity has different tariffs (simple vs bi-hourly vs tri-hourly) — bi-hourly saves money if you use more power at night
  • Water bills in Portugal often include sewer charges (saneamento) and waste collection (residuos) — these are not separate
