Getting Your NIF (Tax Number) in Portugal
The NIF (Numero de Identificacao Fiscal) is Portugal's tax identification number and the single most important number in your Portuguese life. You need it for absolutely everything: opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, getting utilities, buying a SIM card, and even shopping (for e-Fatura receipts).
Determine if you need a fiscal representative
EU/EEA citizens: No fiscal representative needed. Non-EU citizens without a Portuguese address: You need a fiscal representative (a Portuguese citizen or company who receives correspondence on your behalf). Once you have a Portuguese address, you can remove them.
Visit a Financas office
Go to any Servico de Financas (tax office). No appointment needed in most offices — take a ticket and wait. Smaller offices outside Lisbon/Porto tend to have shorter waits. Some Lojas do Cidadao also offer this service.
Submit your documents
Hand over your documents and fill in the NIF application form. The process takes 10-30 minutes. You'll receive your NIF number immediately — it's printed on a small card or paper.
Documents needed
- Passport
- Proof of address (rental contract, or home country address for non-residents)
- Fiscal representative authorization (non-EU without Portuguese address)
Activate Portal das Financas access
With your NIF, request access to the online Portal das Financas. An access code is mailed to your Portuguese address (takes 5-10 business days). Alternatively, use Chave Movel Digital once activated.
Watch out
- ●Get your NIF on day one if possible — literally everything requires it
- ●Fiscal representative services cost 100-300 EUR/year. Remove them as soon as you have a Portuguese address
- ●Your NIF is permanent — even if you leave Portugal and return years later, it's the same number
- ●Guard your NIF like a social security number — it's linked to all your tax and financial data
