Getting Your NISS (Social Security Number)

The NISS (Numero de Identificacao de Seguranca Social) is your Portuguese social security number. It's required for employment, accessing public healthcare, and claiming benefits. If you're employed, your employer usually handles this. Self-employed people and those not working need to register themselves.

1

Check if your employer handles it

If you have a Portuguese employment contract, your employer registers you with Seguranca Social and obtains your NISS. Ask them for the number once processing is complete.

2

Register yourself if needed

If self-employed, retired, or not working: visit your local Seguranca Social office. You can also start the process online through Seguranca Social Direta.

Documents needed

  • Passport or EU ID
  • NIF
  • Proof of address
  • Employment contract (if employed)
  • Birth certificate (sometimes requested)

3

Receive your NISS

The number is usually assigned within 1-2 weeks. You can check the status online through Seguranca Social Direta once you have access. The NISS card is mailed to your address.

4

Register for Seguranca Social Direta

The online portal lets you check contributions, request certificates, and manage your social security affairs. Register at seg-social.pt/consultas with your NISS and NIF.

Watch out

  • You need the NISS before you can register at a Centro de Saude for healthcare
  • If transferring from another EU country's social security, bring your A1 or S1 portable document
  • Self-employed workers must start paying social security contributions after 12 months of activity
