Opening a Bank Account in Portugal

A Portuguese bank account is essential for paying rent, utilities, taxes, and receiving salary. EU anti-money laundering regulations make the process more document-heavy than you might expect, but digital banks are making it easier.

1

Choose your bank

Traditional banks: CGD (state-owned, widest branch network), Millennium BCP (largest private), Novo Banco, Santander. Digital-friendly: ActivoBank (zero fees, good English), Moey (app-only). For expats, ActivoBank is often the easiest starting point.

2

Gather documents

Requirements vary by bank but typically include: passport/ID, NIF, proof of address (rental contract), proof of income (payslips, employment contract, pension statement, or tax return from home country). Some banks ask for a utility bill.

Documents needed

  • Passport or EU ID
  • NIF
  • Proof of address (rental contract)
  • Proof of income or financial means
  • Portuguese phone number
3

Book an appointment or walk in

Most traditional banks require an appointment. ActivoBank and Moey allow online applications. Some branches have English-speaking staff — call ahead to check.

4

Complete KYC and open the account

The bank will run Know Your Customer (KYC) checks. US citizens must also complete FATCA declarations. You'll typically get a debit card immediately and online banking access within 24-48 hours.

5

Set up essentials

Enable MB WAY (Portugal's mobile payment system — essential for daily life). Set up direct debits for utilities and rent. Consider adding your account to your Financas profile for tax refunds via IBAN.

Watch out

  • US citizens face extra paperwork due to FATCA — some banks refuse US customers entirely
  • Don't close your home country bank account until everything is stable in Portugal
  • Portuguese banks charge fees for almost everything — read the fee schedule carefully
  • MB WAY is practically required for daily life in Portugal — set it up immediately
