Learning Portuguese — Language Courses

Learning Portuguese is essential for daily life and required for citizenship (A2 level). Portugal offers free government-funded courses through the PPT (Portugues para Todos) program, plus many private schools and online options. From zero to A2 for citizenship typically takes 6-12 months of regular study.

1

Understand the levels you need

CEFR levels: A1 (beginner), A2 (elementary — minimum for citizenship), B1 (intermediate — useful for work), B2 (upper intermediate — comfortable daily life). For citizenship: A2 certificate from a CIPLE exam. For daily survival: A2-B1 is the practical target.

2

Enrol in a free PPT course

The Portugues para Todos (PPT) program offers free Portuguese courses for legal residents. Available through IEFP (employment institute) partner schools. A1 and A2 courses are typically 150 hours each. Check IEFP website for available courses in your area.

3

Consider private language schools

Faster progression than free courses. Major schools: CIAL (Lisbon), International House, Berlitz, and many local schools. Prices range from 200-600 EUR per month for group classes. Private tutors: 15-40 EUR/hour.

4

Take the CIPLE exam for certification

CIPLE (Centro de Avaliacao e Certificacao de Portugues Lingua Estrangeira) exams are administered by certified centers, often university-affiliated. Exam dates are published in advance. The A2 exam (ACESSO) is what you need for citizenship. Costs around 100 EUR.

5

Practice in daily life

Portuguese people often switch to English when they hear an accent. Politely insist on Portuguese. Join local groups, attend Junta de Freguesia events, shop at local markets, and use Portuguese for all bureaucratic interactions.

Watch out

  • The A2 certificate for citizenship must be from a CIPLE exam — other certificates may not be accepted
  • European Portuguese is significantly different from Brazilian Portuguese — make sure your course teaches European Portuguese
  • Free PPT courses fill up quickly — register early and be flexible on timing
  • The citizenship language requirement cannot be waived (except for nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries)
