AIMA (Immigration & Asylum)
AIMA (Agencia para a Integracao, Migracoes e Asilo) replaced the former SEF. It handles all immigration matters: residency permits, visa renewals, family reunification, and citizenship applications for non-EU nationals.

How to access
- Go to aima.gov.pt
- Navigate to 'Portal AIMA' or 'Agendamento' (scheduling)
- Login with your process number and password
- New users: registration is often done as part of your visa application
Common tasks
Schedule biometrics appointment
Agendamento > Select service > Choose location and time slot.
Check application status
Portal AIMA > Consultar processo. Enter your process number.
Renew residency permit
Start renewal online before your current card expires. Upload required documents.
Tips for expats
- ●Appointment slots are released periodically and fill up fast — check early morning
- ●Keep your process number (numero de processo) safe — you need it for everything
- ●AIMA has been processing a large backlog — automatic extensions have been granted for many permit types
- ●The portal can be unreliable — save confirmation numbers and screenshot everything
